CHILDREN ACHIEVING THROUGH
RE-EDUCATION (CARE)
CARE services are provided on a 10-month basis to school-age children and adolescents who attend lower elementary and middle schools (k-8). There are three classrooms each with a teacher, clinician and behavior health worker. The children receive behavioral interventions and academic instruction. Students are also exposed to some extracurricular and enhancement activities. All of the children are diagnosed as seriously mentally ill or emotionally disturbed and such illness/condition is having a negative impact on his/her ability to be educated. Children must be a CBH member and eligible for Pennsylvania Medical Assistance. CARE receives all referrals directly from CBH. Children remain enrolled in their home schools, but are housed at Whittier/Martha Washington and abide by all school district rules and regulations. Students receive school district lunch and breakfast and are transported by medical assistance van service.
The premise for the provision of CARE services is that family/caregiver involvement is essential and the Child and Adolescent Service System Program ("CASSP") principles must be followed. Also, school-based behavioral health services serve to complement behavioral health services provided to the children/adolescents and their caregivers in the home and in the community. The CARE program is meant to serve as a short-term rehabilitative service facilitating movement to lesser intensive levels of care.
